Embracing Families: Expanding Family Engagement in SUD Treatment

Intermediate

Include Families in a Safe, Structured Way

Families are often deeply affected by a loved one’s substance use, but many treatment programs are not sure how to include them in a safe, helpful, and structured way.

This workshop helps professionals move beyond occasional family contact and begin building stronger family support into their work. Participants will learn how to welcome families, respond to strong emotions, set clear boundaries, and choose the right kind of support for each situation.

The workshop also gives participants a flexible 4-week family education outline they can adapt for the people they serve. The goal is to help families feel included, informed, and better prepared to support recovery without being blamed, ignored, or left on their own.

In this course, you will…

  • Explore allyship and how it applies to the family system.
  • Practice new skills using experiential, role-playing activities.
  • Identify triggers to your own story that may interfere with radical acceptance
  • Learn the criteria used to recommend educational sessions, collateral visits, individual sessions, group sessions, and Celebrating Families.
  • Explore ethical issues that require boundary setting.
  • Identify community resources for family support and learn how to talk about them with families.
  • Apply engagement strategies using motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and radical acceptance.
