Are you ready to take your Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills to the next level?

This intermediate-level training is designed for practitioners who want to deepen their MI practice and strengthen their ability to guide conversations toward meaningful change.

You’ll learn how to identify and reinforce change talk—the language that signals motivation. Research shows that the more individuals voice their desire and intention to change, the more likely they are to follow through. Unfortunately, service providers often dominate the conversation. This training flips the script by focusing on how to listen with purpose, guide skillfully, and evoke a person’s own motivation.

We’ll revisit foundational skills while introducing advanced strategies like complex reflections, strategic use of ambivalence, and purposeful engagement techniques. This evidence-based communication style has been shown to improve outcomes, enhance engagement, and support lasting change.

You’ll receive in-the-moment coaching and hands-on practice to build confidence and fluency.

You’ll Learn:

How to recognize and evoke DARN-CAT language (Desire, Ability, Reasons, Need → Commitment, Activation, Taking Steps)
When to maintain equipoise and allow space for client-directed decision-making
How to resist the “Righting Reflex” and support autonomy
The Ask–Offer–Ask framework for offering information collaboratively
How to use complex reflections to highlight ambivalence and encourage internal resolution
